How to Do a Yoni Steam at Home: Step-by-Step Guide

Your Complete Guide to Yoni Steaming at Home

Yoni steaming is one of the most nurturing rituals you can gift yourself. The good news? You don't need a spa or wellness center to experience its benefits. With the right herbs and a little preparation, you can create a deeply healing steam session right in the comfort of your own home.

New to yoni steaming? Start with our beginner's guide: What Is a Yoni Steam? Benefits, How It Works & Who It's For.

Here's everything you need to know to do it safely and effectively.

What You'll Need

  • A yoni steam herb blend (like the one included in our In-Home Yoni Steam Kit)
  • A medium pot with a lid
  • A yoni steam seat or a toilet/chair you can safely squat over
  • A large blanket or wrap to drape around your waist and legs
  • 4–8 cups of filtered water
  • A timer

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Prepare Your Herbs

Add your herb blend to a pot with 4–8 cups of filtered water. Bring the water to a boil, then reduce to a simmer for 5–10 minutes. This allows the medicinal properties of the herbs to fully infuse into the steam. Remove from heat and let it cool for 1–2 minutes — you never want to steam with boiling hot water.

Step 2: Set Up Your Space

While the herbs are steeping, prepare your space. Dim the lights, play soft music, light a candle — make this a true ritual. Place your pot safely beneath your steam seat or position it in your toilet bowl (with the seat up). Make sure the setup is stable and secure.

Step 3: Test the Temperature

Before sitting down, hold your hand or inner wrist about 4–6 inches above the steam for 10–15 seconds. It should feel warm and comfortable — never hot or burning. If it's too hot, wait another minute and test again. Safety first, always.

Step 4: Begin Your Steam

Disrobe from the waist down and sit or squat over the steam. Drape your blanket around your waist and legs to create a tent that keeps the warmth in. Set a timer for 20–30 minutes and simply relax. Breathe deeply, meditate, journal, or just be still.

Step 5: Rest & Hydrate

When your session is complete, gently pat dry and dress warmly. Drink a glass of warm water or herbal tea to stay hydrated. Rest if you can — your body has just done some beautiful healing work. Avoid cold temperatures or drafts for at least an hour after steaming.

How Often Should You Steam?

For general wellness maintenance, steaming 1–3 times per month is a great starting point. Many women like to steam in the week before their period to ease cramping and support a healthy flow. Listen to your body — it will tell you what it needs.

Safety Reminders

  • 🚫 Do not steam if you are pregnant
  • 🚫 Do not steam while menstruating
  • 🚫 Do not steam if you have an active infection, open wounds, or an IUD
  • ✅ Always test the steam temperature before sitting
  • ✅ Consult your healthcare provider if you have any health concerns
